A Guide to Inlay Rings

A Guide to Inlay Rings

One of the best things about custom rings is the nearly endless variety of materials that can be incorporated into the design. It's also one of the worst things, because I want to use ALL THE THINGS! Whether you prefer vibrant colors, natural textures, or meaningful symbolism, the inlay material you choose helps tell the story you want to tell.

Here are some of the most popular materials used in custom inlay rings.

Crushed Opal

Crushed opal is known for its brilliant flashes of color. Depending on the variety, you may see blues, greens, purples, reds, and golds dancing across the surface as the ring moves in the light.

Abalone Shell

Abalone brings the mystery and beauty of the ocean to your ring. Natural shades of teal, blue, purple, and silver create a stunning iridescent effect. If you long to be at the beach but can't be there right now, slip on one of my abalone rings and you'll feel better.

Dichrolam

Dichrolam is a material that shifts color as it catches the light. It is made from layers of dichroic film, meant to be an alternative to dichroic glass. Shifting shades of teal, green, purple, blue, red, and gold tones can appear to change right before your eyes. My sister nailed it when she called it a kaleidoscope effect. If vibrant colors and contemporary style are your vibe, you will be a Dichrolam ring collector for life. See the many possible combinations of the Lumina Collection.

Burled Celluloid

Burled celluloid features swirls of rich color and depth resembling exotic wood or tortoiseshell. I choose this material in lieu of wood sometimes for its unique depth of color and shine that pairs well with especially abalone.

Custom Artwork

I enjoy painting with alcohol inks almost as much as I enjoy making rings. So I found a way to combine my original paintings into inlay rings. When someone orders a ring from my Studio in Steel collection, they are receiving a strip of my actual artwork in a ring. Designed for those who crave the unique and unusual, these rings are the answer. Take a peek at Studio in Steel.

And this is just the beginning! Custom designs, laser cut designs, design-your-own symbols -- the possibilities are endless, but we'll save that for another day.

Your Ring, Your Story

Every custom ring begins with a simple idea and becomes something deeply personal. The materials you choose help create a ring that is uniquely yours. There are very few limitations to what I can place into your ring to create a miniature, yet powerful and meaningful story just for you. I invite you to collaborate with me on designing your ring!

That's the beauty of custom jewelry. Your ring, your way.
